Interested in any information/web site/resorces regarding a 1954 GMC half ton. Has a 248 inch six with a four speed hydromatic which I understand is quite rare. Any information on number produced or any other help appreciated. Follow Ups: |

| My neighbor had one, half ton with the hydramatic, there is no park on the quadrant? Had to pull it in reverse after shutdown, then the tranny would lock. They were fairly low production, I'd be checking on the GMC truck sites, collector clubs for more info. Oh yeah, don't try to put on Chevy six parts on this engine, don't believe anything will fit off a 235. John Follow Ups: |

| | All of the GMC truck sites my search engine found were for current model years. Must be doing something wrong. You are right about no park position. I think all of the four speed hydromatics with the low first gear worked that way. Took a little getting used to and will take a little rethinking but as I recall they worked fine that way. For sure it is a totally different engine than the 235 inch Chevs. Your mileage may vary Follow Ups: |

| I have a shop manual but it gives no clues about production. They would be pretty rare though. Follow Ups: |

| That engine is a Pontiac if memory serves me. I have been told the trany was sought after by the hot rodders. I just remember that it worked good in the 1/2 ton I used in the late 60's. Just like the 4 speed manual, just automatic. |

| father in law bought '53 gmc 228 6 cyl. hydra new. wife and i restored from '91 to '99 engines were built by gmc not pontiac trans is identical to cad, olds, & pontiac of same era. park is achieved by putting trans in reverse and shutting engine off. should only start in neutral. diff between car and truck tranny is trucks had smaller torque convertor. trucks had enclosed driveshaft and 5.13 stump puller rear gears. ours will run at 50 m.p.h. if you push it a little. gmc was first trucks to offer automatics ( in '53) chevy followed in '54 using the same trans we had ours rebuilt by a trans shop in '98 or '99 at about $1100. good luck! |

| I've owned the same 54 chevy pu since before Vietnam started - still got it. It was airforce issue (Re USAF data files) and had a factory hydromatic trans and virtually no chrome It ( the trans) never worked right and doubt its worth the effort to rebuild even to todays standard. Even had it rebuilt once and it still let me down to the point of being downright dangerous in traffic. The reason i was told it was sold to the military was chevy was the low bid. No wonder there. Sorry if this offends but I still have bad feelings about. |
