My father recently passed down to my seven year old son a 49 Jeep Wiley that is in failry good condition. I think it was more his wife wanted it out of the garage and he could not part with it so he gave it to my son knowing I would never sell it. I would like to restore it for my son's first vehicle when he turns 16. With a top speed of around 45 it will keep him out of trouble. I am looking for anyone else who owns one of these fine trucks to pick your brain from time to time as I go through the process.

A 49 Willys pickup like the guy said is mighty slow. We had one back when they were a whole bunch newer, and with general farm use had transmission and transfer case problems, with just normal use. Parts are pretty much available, but folks think they are gold plated or something. 35-40mph down the highway won't keep a teenager happy for sure. Also a sub marginal heater/defroster system. Keep the door latches well lubed if it has those push button inside door releases. And its six volt, so has to be kept in real good tune to fire up quick. john in Nebraska

Are you talking about a Willys Jeep that looks like a Army jeep, a Willys Jeep that is a pickup truck, a Willys Jeep "Jeepster" that looks like a station wagon, or a Willys Jeep "Jeepster" that is a convertible? Each has their positive and negative features.

I have had a few of those trucks, and have a reprint of the factory shop manual, if you need any help, email is open.
.
I do not know you, or how your son will drive this truck, but there is no way in h_ll I would give one of these to a normal teenager to drive. These are good trucks for a mature driver, but most teenagers will tear a truck like this up, it is not fast enough, and likes about 35 mph a lot better than 45. Keep this truck for yourself.

Plus the fact that it will go just about anywhere, and a kid with his first adult toy shouldn't go just anywhere.

Yeah that brings back old memories, the key words here are "just about". When I was young and foolish I tried to jump a log with a M-38 I thought the log was probably rotten and I wouldnt get stuck. But it wasnt and I did. Of course this was out in the middle of nowhere and I did not have a winch, or anything else for that matter. Long long walk. I also got an FC-150 stuck a long ways from home once, again no equipment, slow learner i guess.
