I own an Australian assembled Bedford truck (British
designed GM truck very similar to Chev)

It is a 1974 build with original Mexican Chev 292
engine (it is a real international truck!). It bolts up to a 4
speed Bedford gearbox almost identical to Chev 4
speed gear box, then 2 speed Bedford rear axle. Truck
weighs 4 tons and will carry 6 tons.

Which other GM engines have the same flywheel and
bellhousing bolt pattern as the 292?

Thanks

Bob

the 292 has the same bellhousing and the 230 and 250 I6 and allthe V8. on the flywheel if its the 13 inch clutch you need the industrial harmonic balancer but on the 11 and 12 inch you dont. the flywheel will work with all the I6 motors and all the V8 motor but the 400 smallblock and the 454 bigblock. as long as the motor has the 2 part rearmain seal the 1 part seal has a new bolt pattern.

(In the US, anyway), the 292 bellhousing pattern is the same as the 250 I-6 cylinder, etc., and the small block AND big block V-8 series, AND the 4.3 V-6

Forgot to say that it has the 12 inch clutch.

Engine is still in good condition, but it is no powerhouse
with the truck loaded

I would like to put in a GM V8. There are plenty of GM
V8s here in Australia in Holden cars made by GM

A friend has suggested a Perkins diesel (were an
option in many Bedford trucks, but use an adaptor to
gear box) or an Izuzu diesel also with adaptor. Also
suggested using Izuzu 5 speed overdrive gear box.

Thanks

Bob

"no powerhouse"--your moving 10 tons what do you expect.
You could easily drop a small block chevy in there but why would you do that? Unless you change the transmission the gear ratios are the same and the V8 will turn up to 4000 and the truck will move along at the same speed as when the 292 spins up to 4000. The ONLY thing you will gain is a quicker start--maybe. Those 292 have a lot of REAL power--torque. If you want more horsepower why not change the intake for a 2 or 4 barrel carb and adjust the cam.
I have a C-60 which is in the same category you are talking about and while she's not fast she always gets there and gas lasts alot longer then in a V8. Course I load 400 bu of corn on it (about 12 ton), empty weight is 8000 lb so the loaded weight is close to 16 ton.
