I found a nice F600 with good cab, restored I think, 330 V8, 5spd w/ two-spd, and flatbed for a few hundred. I think I'll get it, but just like to hear some opinions. That 330 is like a 390 right? I think this is a 1960s truck. What are they worth?

The 330 is in the truck engine family. 330, 359. 361, 389, 391. and if I remember right, it will use the same bellhousing and motor mounts as the FE engines. I have a FE 390 out of a one ton, and I have a 391 out of a F600. they are side by side on the shop floor and they look the same.

Yes, the 330 is in the same family as the 390. These are the FE engines, very stout, and with proper maintenance, will last a vey long time. The FE series was designed from the start to be truck engine, I believe the first one was the good old 352.

Looked a little while but found this:

The FE engine story isn’t as complex as you might imagine. There were only nine displacements--332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427, and 428 cubic inches.

There was also a family of medium- and heavy-duty truck engines based on the FE series of engines called "FT," which stands for (you guessed it) Ford Truck. The FT engine family included the 330ci HD and MD, 359, 361, 389, and 391ci. There is some interchangeability between the FE and FT, but one has to be careful in a quest for parts because the FT looks virtually identical to the FE externally. Though a lot of internal parts look the same, there are important differences we will get into later.

I don't think the 330 is in the same family as the 390, but it is a smaller (older) brother of the 361. The 330 is a good stout (low power) used in medium truck applications. We had over 200K on our 1971 F600 without any major work - just make sure your oil is kept fresh and you mightwant to have the radiator routed out, heat is about the only thing that kills these old engines. I have no experience with the 5 speed - somebody else will have to comment on that.

Three important things to check on the F600 trucks:

1. Does the two speed work - and will you need it?

2. BRAKES!!!! 35+ years isn't easy on wheel cylinders and master cylinder

3. Rear axle leaks. For some reason people work on the rear brakes and don't replace the seal on the axle shaft. Starts leaking oil and seizes (or almost seizes) going down the road. Axle cools and unseizes, owner refills with oil and sells truck immediately.

If its running almost any price under $1000 sounds pretty good even if you do have to do brake work (could spend real money on a truck and still have to that).

Been there and sure nuff done it. 1955 F-600,Y-block V8. If the manufacture's tag is still attatched to the glove box door or the driver's door sill, get yourself a Mac's Auto Parts catalogue and you can find out all the pertainant information, at least at time of manufacture. Mine's a tuff ole truck with a flat bed dump. Big problem is getting sheet metal. Believe me, everything on this truck that can rust, is rust. I have always had great luck finding mechanical parts for it right here in Tiny Town, Okla.
