I've got a 95 chevy 1500 with an automatic overdrive trans.(not exactly a classic)I'm going to use it for pulling a 18'trailer.What bad things can happen when using overdrive while pulling a trailer? If the trans is constantly downshifting,I use direct anyway, but does it hurt to use OD when on the straight and level? Thanks,Mike V.

ive got an 89 6 lug 2500 and ive been through 2 700r4's i would do everything listed so far like heavy duty cooler, regular fluid/filter changes. when i drive at anything under 50mph i leave it in drive so it dosnt hunt between 3 and 4.

Owner's manual says don't tow in OD. Hard on everything. I've got a '95 Suburban with the 454 and the only time I'll ever tow in OD is on flat, level Interstate. If we start going up and down a bit, I put it back in Drive. Anything under 60 and I don't even think about using the OD.

Mike,
The 700R4 is a good trans for running down the road empty but no good for heavy towing. I have a '91 GMC with 280000 kms, and the only problem I've had with it is the trans. It has a 3.73 rear end and I tow a 6000 lb. travel trailer. Had to rebuild twice. Always tow in drive and watch the tach to keep the torque converter in the lock-up mode as much as posible. When the converter is not locked it will jump about 200 rpm and this adds heat to the trans. Also, install a good trans cooler. Change the oil and filter in the trans often.

It sounds overloaded. Besides your transmission, you may be running the engine too hard and cause overheating.
