Folks: The other day I found a flexible rubber or neoprene hose with a plug in the end hanging down from the brake line junction box on the left side of the rear axle on my '90 Bronco. I tied it up out of the way. It looks like a clip used to be holding it up but rusted away. What is the purpose of the hose? Thanks. |

| Randy, It's a vent hose for your rear axle, you should be able to see where it was attached to the frame or body above the axle. It needs to be re-attached in the same place to keep water out of the axle. Redmud: |

| Thanks, but why is it attached to the junction fitting where the brake line coming to the back splits into 2 (left and right sides) and has a plug in the end? |

| The bolt that retains the junction block for the brake lines is hollow, and since the end of the hollow bolt passes into the interior of the axle, this provides a vent port for the axle. |

| Randy, We may not be talking about the same thing here. there should bo 2 hoses on the rear drive axle, Brake hose and vent hose. All rear drive axles have a vent hose as well as front axles on 4x4's. Also a rubber brake hose on the rear, that attaches to the junction block where the lines split off to each wheel.{could it be that the brake hose has been plugged for some reason??} Do you have both hoses on the rear axle? vent and brake hose. | I'm going to have to get under there and have another look for the axle vent, if this isn't it. But it sure can't be an effective vent with a plug in the end. Also, it's attached on the back side of the block, not on top. |

| Randy, If your Bronco is 4x4, look at the front 3rd member, it will have the same vent hose with the plug. which is not really a plug, but a vent cap, and most vent caps are made of plastic. and donot remove the plug, cap, and drive the rig without it. that cap keeps out dirt and water. Redmud: |

| Maybe what you think is a plug is really a little check valve.I've seen these stuck in the vent hoses.Lets the housing breathe without sucking in all the bottom-side crud or water. If this is what your Bronco has, clean the valve real good, take the hose off and blow it out and reinstall everything.Had this plug up on a ' 93 F-250.Kept seeping gear lube out the axle seals. Not a fun job. |
