I have a 1958 C60 Viking with a 235 straight six engine. Will a chevy small block V8 bolt to the transmission in that truck. Thanks for the help |

| Hello, Putting a small block in your '58 is not to big a job. If your tranny is a 4 speed its most likely a sm420(possibly the best truck 4 speed ever made) you will need a cast iron bellhousing with the mounting feet. GM used these on Many v8's from 55 to about 72,and 230-292 sixes from 63-67. Flywheels from about any above engines will work, just make sure your clutch will bolt up. You will need to either fabricate or buy an engine mount kit from an aftermarket supplier like Golden state. Since the v8 is shorter than the 6 you will need to make or modify a junk yard fan shroud to fit. throttle linkage, wiring, and exhaust will have to fabricated, but don't let that scare you its not that hard. And believe me the first time you pull a steep hill with a big load on your truck you'll wonder why you didn't dump that old 6 years ago. Good luck,...Mike |

| why waste time with a low torque v8 you can lose the straight 6 but maybe you could replace it with a v6 its not much different then putting in a v8 but with tons more torque plus the v8s don't get a whole lot bigger than say a 478 v6 gas or diesel it will still bolt up to the tranny plus ther alot more fun |

| That's a good thought on the big V6's but i'm not familiar with those. Are they easy to find? Where would I look to find on? Are parts available for a rebuild? |

| You would need to replace the bellhousing and flywheel with V8 parts,as the "old style 235-261 parts are different than V8 housing and wheel. |

| The bellhousing to block pattern for the V8 is the same from 55 on up. If you are using an 86 or newer engine with the 1 piece rear main seal, you will need the correct 86 or newer flywheel for that CI engine. |

| | Generally speaking, your old transmission and pilot shaft will fit the newer V-8 bell housing and plug into the clutch plate and pilot bearing on the newer engine. Chevy wasn't as nuts as certain other companies to change everything, and make it incompatible. |
