Just brought home a 74 Chevy 1 ton C30 box truck. It was
drivable, but the front brakes were pulling pretty bad.
Today I found out why. The driver's side came apart
easy and looked fine. I just cleaned a little rust from the
caliper and cylinder and put it all back on. However, when I
tried to take apart the right side, it wouldn't come loose. I
took out the spacer at the bottom of the disk assembly,
just like the left side. The assembly was free to move a
little, but there is not quite enough clearance to remove it.
Wierd. Even with lots of prying it wouldn't clear the
housing.

OK, plan B. I thought I would just remove the entire rotor
taking off the brakes and all. Nope. The disk assembly hits
on the dust shield and stops everything. To get the dust
shield out, you have to remove the rotor which first needs
the disk removed. Good grief, do I need to take out the
kingpin too? I've got to fix it, it is metal on metal.

I just put everything back on for now. Another wierd thing
was when I tried to bleed the brakes on the right side. It
was all I could do to force fluid through the line.

I am really confused. No wonder this brake needs repair.

Any of this make sense?

Mike

Did you compress the piston in the caliper? You may need to replace the caliper if it's not bleeding right.

Nope, I didn't compress the piston. That has to be it.

I checked with the local auto parts store and they have an
unbelievable bargain: $40 for a complete assembly,
including pads. How can I say no?

Thanks, I will go at it again and compress the piston first.

Most of the rigs with metal to metal and a caliper that won't slide off is due to the piston being stuck in the caliper bore and not releasing the pads, ala worn out brakes. Get a pry bar in behind the OUTER edge(between the caliper and rotor) of the caliper and make enough room for the grooves to clear. It'll slide right off. Think twice about saving all you can on brake parts, it's your life not a video game. Loren
