Installing a 67 chevy 292 6 cyl in a 68 3/4 4x4 that I assume had a 307 or 327 that I removed. In putting the 6 in so far I have had to remove the crossbrace that the engine mounts attach to. Also the crossbrace is not wide enough for the oil pan, snug fit. So the question of the day is does this engine change require the mounts from the 67 and just exactly what & why am running into this problem when I thought chevy was pretty standard in the engine interchangeability. The 67 is a 1/2 ton 2wd by the way. To really confuse things I suspect that the V8 was not original, only a hunch. Help with any insight on what I am running into would be appreciated. Thanx-- |

Start by getting an oil pan for a 4X4 292 engine.

If you can get a copy of the factory shop manual for the truck you can check the VIN and see which engine the truck originally had. One of the digits indicates the engine. I looked at Advance Autoparts web site for the 1968 K20, the K indicates 4x4, and the 20 3/4 ton, and the engines they state available is a 250, 307, 327, 396. The C20, where C indicates 2x4 the engines available are 250, 392, 307, 327, 396. I'm not sure why the 292 was not offered, but there should be some parts that would mount the engine since there should be mounting holes available. Did you get all the mounting parts from the 1967 with the engine? I looked up the part numbers for the oil pan gasket sets for the 292 and 250, and they are the same number. Would the oil pan for the 250 be different in shape than the 292? Maybe trying the oil pan from a 250 on the 292 would give you room? If it works, then you will need to check the oil pickup to make sure it's right, and the dipstick and dipstick tube, too.

There is an adapter on each side that attaches where the V-8 motor mounts attach, and provides a new attachment point, I believe farther ahead, for the 6-cylinder mounts to attach to. It's been a while since I was under the hood on one of these, but a friend has one that I may see in passing in the next day or two. If he stops by with it, I'll post further details.

The 292 engine block has the right motor mount pad several inches forward of where it would be on the smaller 230-250 sixes or a V8.I suspect it takers a special 292 frame pad. I installed a 292 in an 80 GMC K 3500 that originally had a V8. I had to fabricate an adapter plate to locate the right frame adapter(V8) far enough forward to align with the 292 motor mount pad.
