I have a 1954 divco milk truck that has a flat 6 cyl. in it. I am having the hardest time finding out the engine type. It is suppose to be a hercules engine, but the engine has nothing other than N4880 on the right side
CWC
and REG-1 on the left side. Anyone know what type of engine it could be? I can send pics if you would like.

Matt,

I can't find specs on a CWC Hercules engine. The cloest letter models I can find are QXC 221 cu in, WXC-3 383 cu in, WXLC 358 cu in and WXLC3 404 cu in. For a milk truck I would think the engine is probably in the 221 cu in range and may be a variation of the QXC built to Divco's specs. Some QXC specs: 221 cu in, 6 cyl, 3 3/8" x 4 1/8", 77.5 hp @ 3200 rpm, 159 torque @ 1400 rpm. If you have your engine apart to compare, the QXC has 7/8" wrist pins, 2" rod bearings, 7 2 1/2" main bearings, 1 1/2" intake valves, 1 1/4" exhaust valves, 1 1/4" carburator throat, 4 ring pistons (3 compression and 1 oil ring), 1/8" compression ring grooves, 3/16" oil ring grooves, governor was optional equipment as were several compression ratios. Hope this helps. If these specs don't match yours, in size likely for milk truck Hercules also made six cylinder engines in 230 cu in, 237 cu in, 245 cu in, and 263 cu in. Give me size of your parts and I can probably match it to a model. Actually Hercules multi cylinder gasoline engines ranged all the way from the BXB 39 cu in to the HXE 935 cu in and their diesel engines ranged from the DIX83 83 cu in to the DNXV8DTS 1468 cu in, just for a point of interest. These are from their list of engines and specs in 1955.

Have a look at:

http://www.divco.org/divco%20history.htm

They used either a Continental or Herculese in 1954.

There should be a plate riveted to the engine block with the engine manufacturer, model and serial number, and probably valve lash. If the engine is dirty it could be hidden.

The CWC sounds like a Hercules model designation although I can't match it (see my post above). Continental models usually were a letter plus the cubic inches, for example; Continental H-243 243 cu in, H-260 260 cu in, etc.
