Besides all the other problems you have just heard about, they burn oil badly. Most of them were replaced with a 239 or 255 V8. You can get parts for these engines and they make good power

According to an old book I have, the 1939 Lincoln V12 had 414 cubic inches (3-1/8 bore X 4-1/2 stroke)and produced 150 HP @ 3400 RPM. The book also lists a Zephyr V12 which is a bit smaller.

The Lincoln V12 had big oil system problems even at stock HP/rpm. One big problem was that it used the same oil pump as the flathead V8 and was way undersize.A little wear and oil pressure was nearly 0. A very smooth interesting engine without much performance potential.

Does that mean is not good for power and a pile of junk for a hto rod. what woudl happen if a guy got a high volume oil pump with high pressure????

My knowledge of the Lincoln V12 is all second hand from books I have read. They state that the Lincoln V12 was not very reliable, even in stock form. I suspect there are other weak links in the chain besides the oil pump. like most flathead engines, the breathing is not very good so they cannot make much power per CI.
I remember seeing a Custom 30's Lincoln hot rod sell at auction for a very high price because it used a modified Linciln V12 instead of a much more common modern V8. Keep in mind that this was a show quality car that was likely never driven except from the enclosed trailer to the show floor,if then.

Several comments to both posts.

The restoration below is absolutely gorgeous.

Having seen the Ford flathead V8 as my first auto engine, I had a hard time adjusting to the overhead valve engines ('53) that only had one radiator hose (top and bottom). I didn't understand the coolant routing on the flathead vs OHV engines at the time.

On the specs, looks like a highway cruiser engine, not hot rod. The stroke is horrible. Would make one heck of a Funk conversion for an n.....wow!!!

there is an 8N with a v-12 Zephyr engine right here in Springfield Mo. I was just looking it over again yesterday at the annual steam and tractor show. I have seen it around for 3 or 4 years, but have never had a chance to talk to the owner.

any flat head will reav high no droping OR floating valves no push rods cam runs rigth on the tappet... btu that v12 would look good and have power in the 8n ford :) i was thinking of puttign a 429CJ boss or 460 cobra jet in a 8n or even a 534 truck engine but that wotn rev high enough...

Didn't say it wouldn't rev. Just how long it took to get it revving. For a hot rod it needs to be fast (1955 Chev V8 2.5" stroke as I recall), for a tractor you would love that stroke.

A fellow named Jack White in Spokane recently built up a beautiful custom '38 Lincoln Zephyr with this V-12 flathead. I think he had the heads custom-made, as they were described as "one of a kind".
