Our FFA chapter has a 1950 Dogde truck thats about all I know about it. Today we was working on it to get it to start and we got it started after jumping it and then putting a new sediment bowl on it and changing the gasket in the other one! Is there supposed to be two bowls?? Then it started w/ starter fluid ran pretty hard it hadn't been started in a while. Then once started the carb was leaking from somewhere shooting enough gas I didn't want to attempt to run it! It looked like from the bottom some where! I wanna try to get it running good enough so we can take it out to our county fair the end of July. And when was trying to start it to get it back to the shop and the battery blew the tops off, a guy asked us if it was hooked up right! How is it supposed to be I'm guess it was right b/c it has started and ran before! Thanks for any help. -Dan

Best advice that I can give you.

Don't worry about deadlines or goals. Take your time and do it right.

What you need to do now--;

1. Rebuild carb.

2. Clean out fuel lines, tank, replace filter.

3. Check, entire elecrical system. Replace points, condeser, plugs, wires, cap, and coil.

4. Change oil and filter.

5. Flush cooling system.

6. Restart, and get to operating temp. Check compression.

Then you will know what you have, and what you need to do.

If motor, tranny, and clutch seem good--then do not attempt to move untill you completly do all the brakes--lines, hoses, master cylinder, wheel cylinder, pads, and drums.--don't skimp here. This is a safety issue.

Good luck with the project.

I have a 1946 Dodge that I have been working on and when I finally got it started recently, it also leaked fluid all over. It seemed that the needle valve was letting too much gas in the bowl and that it was overflowing through there. There appears to be hole to allow the extra gas out, which is where it was coming down onto the bottom on mine. Take the carb apart, clean it (I let mine soak overnight with carb cleaner), scrape loose junk off, then put it back together. I just used some liquid gasket stuff from Napa when I put it back together and now it doesn't leak. I am not sure how cheap the gaskets are, or how easy they are to find. there is a great store by me that stocks all sorts of stuff like that. If you have a hard time finding what you need, try them. It is Northwestern Auto in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dan, your truck should be 6volt, positive ground. If you jumped it with a 12volt negative ground battery you've probably killed the voltage regulator. The carb is probably leaking from dried out gaskets, try replacing them and see if it helps. Also, check out the forum at http://merc583.addr.com/pilothouse/index.html. Pilothouse.com if the link does not work. The guys there can get you moving along pretty quickly.

Hey, thanks for the info! Where can I find a set of gaskets for that carb at? They battery, so I need a six volt and hook the cables back up the same way as the battery post are, or what do I need to do there?? Then when starting/jumping it I need to use 6 volts and hook the cables up how? Do you have to use starter fluid on most of these older trucks or does it need some tuning? Thanks for the help! :) -Dan
