I found an 86 F250 with a 460 for $600 dont know anything about the 460 except its very thristy. I've had experiance with many other Ford engines just not the 460. So tell me what you know about it any problems to look out for? Its got 140,000 on it I beleive, am I looking at a rebuild soon? I do know its been well taken care of.

The 460 is definatley a good one. Last one I had was in an 85 1 ton. Had to do a rebuild at 220,000 but only because the oil plug came out (Had just had it serviced) and the guy driving it didnt get it shut down in time. Fuel mileage on mine was around 12 mpg and it doesnt matter if you're loaded or not.

If you're pulling any loads with it, You will definatley like this one. It'll pull the world if you can get the truck to untrack =)

460 is best gas engine Ford ever put in trucks--have several that have over 180,000 miles and still run good, body has just rotted away
take car of them, drive reasonable and they will get fair mileage (twice a gm 454, or more) and pull the snot out of anything you hook to them--
I can't even sell any 460's as they outlast the vehicles they are put in

I have a 1977 Ford (Brittany) motor home with a 460 truck engine, but it has no oil dipstick. If I knew the oil capacity I can modify a dipstick. Can anyone tell me how much oil this engine takes? thanks

Why do people think the 460 is thirsty? I have a 302 and make 15 mpg normally, once I made 17 but I was only going 50 mph. Most people I talk to with 460's make 12 or 13 mpg - and at least they have the power to get out of their own way.

Ford 302 = 300 six with 2 more cylinders to use more fuel...

460 is a good engine, I've heard of a few with around 250,000 miles on them. You should be able to get a few more miles out of this one, for $600 I would take it!
